For this project from the 1st year of my degree, we had to design costumes for pairs of circus performers, in a dance piece recreating shots from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. My first set of designs used traditional contemporary dance garments, with pleated fabric inspired by Indian dace costumes. The colours, print and placing of the pleated sections were intended to imitate birds. For the second set of designs, as directed I was going for a much more ‘sleazy circus’ feel and so I reinterpreted traditional circus costumes for modern dance wear. For details of the design process for this project please see my blog post on the subject. 2015.
